Pre-Assessment
The test
On Monday September 7th the students took a pre-assessment quiz to test their understanding of bird anatomy, bird adaptations, New Mexico birds, birds in Navajo stories, and the five essential parts of a habitat.
the results
9/7/2015: The pre-assessment I gave my students today related to my New Mexico Birds unit has affirmed that the topics, objectives, and focuses I will be taking during my unit are based on areas of growth these students need. The average scores on my pre-assessment tool was 43%. The students all showed a general understanding of bird anatomy, as it relates to human anatomy, but had no understanding of the scientific, or more specific, names for each part of a bird. This has affirmed my plans to review the parts of a bird's body, but has also led me to believe that more specific/scientific names, should be reviewed with these students. As for adaptations, the students knew wings were an adaptation that helps birds fly, but could not explain how or why. Also, only three students showed partial to full understanding that bird beaks are different sizes based on the type of food they eat. This has affirmed my need to include bird beaks and feathers in my adaptation stations. Most of the students could only list two out of the five things necessary for a bird's survival (food and water). This has affirmed the need to teach the five essential parts of a habitat with these students. Only about five students knew of a Navajo story with birds in it, which shows the necessity for connecting birds with Navajo culture, if possible. When naming birds found in New Mexico several of the students could name birds they have seen, but birds such as "peacock," "flamingo," and "bald eagle" were listed even though their main habitat is not in New Mexico. This affirms my plans to research specific birds that are found in New Mexico, including information about their life, habitat, and specific adaptations.
